What Is Your State’s Top Export?

I came across this illustration while catching up on some industry reading. I think it is very interesting to see what each state is sending out to the world.

You could have guessed some states’ top exports without even looking, like oil for Texas and lobster for Maine. But it was suprising to see how many states have their top export in the aerospace industry. In fact, aircraft exports was the country’s second biggest export, behind only oil.

Then, there were some unique exports that would have been hard to guess, especially if you weren’t from those specific states. Here are a few that I would have never known:

  • South Dakota: Brewing Dregs – the sediment found in brewing beer! It’s used by farmers for use in animal feed.
  • Massachusets: Gold
  • New York: Diamonds
  • New Jersey: Palladium
  • Wyoming: Disodium Carbonate – It is used in the manufacture of detergents, soaps, and paper.

It will be interesting to see this map 10 years from now to see how industries have changed across the country. Particularly, I would be interested in seeing the states that currently have fossil fuels as their top export and finding if they were bypassed by other indsutries.
